The first step in setting up 802.1x is to install the Network Services Root Certificate. It is recommended that you use Safari to download the certificate. Right-click (or Control-click) on the certificate and choose "Save Linked File to the Desktop." Find the downloaded file (it will be called "nsroot.cer") and double-click it. A program called "Keychain Access" will open, and you should see a window similar to that shown below in Figure A. Make sure that "X509Anchors" is selected from the Keychain pulldown menu. By default, it will not be; you will have to change it.

You may be prompted for a password, in a dialog similar to Figure B. Enter the password you use for your computer. This may or may not be the same password that you use for email, etc.

In the upper right corner of your screen, find the Airport icon in the menu bar (it looks like radio waves), ensure that Airport is turned on, and select "Open Internet Connect..." as shown in Figure C.

You should now see a window similar to that shown in Figure D. Look for the "802.1X" icon. If it's present, click on it. If it's not present, go to the "File" menu and select "New 802.1X Connection..." as shown in Figure E, then click on the new "802.1X" icon.

You should now see a window similar to that shown in Figure F. Under the Configuration pulldown menu, select "Edit Configurations..."

You should now see a window similar to that shown in Figure G. Ensure that the configuration details in your window look just like that shown in Figure G, except that the User Name and Password should be your own NetID and password. Highlight "TTLS." Finally, click the "Configure..." button.

You should now see a window similar to that shown in Figure H. Under the TTLS Inner Authentication pulldown menu, select "PAP." Leave "Outer Identity" blank. Press the "OK" button.

You will now be returned to a window similar to that shown in Figure D. Press the "Connect" button. You should see messages about "Connecting," "Authenticating," "Connected," and "Connected via TTLS." You may now quit Internet Connect. You may be asked to save changes in a dialog similar to Figure I. Click the "Save" button.

This completes the configuration of 802.1x.
