Wireless LAN coverage at UT
In January 2001, OIT started a project to deploy 802.11b wireless connectivity on the UT campus. The project consisted of two phases and was to be completed within 18 months (Jun 2002). Phase 1 was implemented in the Fall 2001 and it included mostly academic buildings on the main and AG campuses and the UT Conference Center. (See yellow areas on the original map above). Note that some buildings planned for Phase 1 are still on hold due to construction and renovation or lack of network connectivity that will be provided by the Volnet project. Detailed list of buildings in Phase 1 is available here. Phase 2 started in November 2001 and was completed in the Spring 2002. It included the rest of the academic and administrative buildings on campus. OIT re-evaluated the plan for Phase 2 and decided that sport facilities and dormitories will not be covered by wireless at this time. List of buildings in Phase 2 is available here. OIT first started providing wireless LAN access in 9 buildings during the Fall of 2000. Buildings were selected as a part of pilot projects to evaluate wireless technologies and their educational value. This installation was based on Lucent's WaveLan II wireless access points and was phased out during Fall 2001. More info on this project is available here. Office
