New Wireless Networks at UTK

UTK has completed a massive wireless upgrade to bring the campus wireless network to a new level of coverage and performance. The new network will support 802.11b/g as before as well as 802.11a and 802.11n allowing for much higher speeds on the network! As part of this upgrade the old "nomad", "nomadx", and "utk" network SSIDs will be retired and replaced with new networks. The new network names are as follows:

ut-open:
  • This network is for students, faculty, and staff.
  • All machines on this network must be registered.
  • No encryption is done over the air.
  • This network replaces the old nomad network.


ut-wpa2:
  • This network is for students, faculty, and staff.
  • All machines on this network must be registered.
  • Instructions are available for connection in Windows XP and Mac OS X via the OIT Knowledge-base.
  • This network replaces the old nomadx and nomad-secure networks.
  • Encrypted from device all the way to the core of the network


ut-visitor:
  • This network is for visitors of the university; both sponsored and non-sponsored.
  • All machines on this network will be NATed.
  • No encryption is done over the air.
  • This network replaces the old utk network.

eduroam:
  • This network is for visitors from other universities that participate in the eduroam system (http://www.eduroam.org).
